People Are Your Business: Better Relationships Mean Better Results
People make business happen. When people feel valued, respected and supported, business has the opportunity to thrive.
Ask any business owner if they want more business, and the answer will almost always be yes. Most will immediately think about attracting more customers, increasing sales and improving profitability. But how many stop to consider the role that relationships play in achieving those goals?
As my good friend Joseph D’Souza puts it, “Business is purely about people connecting with people.” It’s a simple idea, but one with powerful implications for every business.
Of course, customers are essential. They are the reason we exist, and their satisfaction is critical to our success. But customers are only one part of the picture. Our employees, suppliers, contractors, delivery drivers, business partners and the wider community all contribute to the success of our business.
Customers: Solve problems, build loyalty
Successful businesses understand that they are not simply selling products or services; they are solving problems. Customers want to feel welcomed, listened to and confident that someone genuinely cares about helping them.
A friendly greeting, an attentive ear, a willingness to find solutions and a sincere thank you can make a lasting impression. These small actions help build trust, encourage repeat business and turn satisfied customers into advocates for your business.
Importantly, customer service is not just the responsibility of the sales team. Everyone in your business has a role to play in creating a positive customer experience.
Staff: Recognition creates better performance
Your people are among your most valuable business assets. Yet too many businesses rely on criticism, pressure and punishment to drive performance, overlooking the power of encouragement, trust and recognition.
People want to know their contribution matters. Acknowledging good work, providing constructive feedback, encouraging initiative and giving employees the opportunity to use their strengths can help create a more engaged and productive team.
When people feel respected and supported, they are more likely to take ownership, work collaboratively and contribute to the broader success of the business. A positive workplace can also help reduce staff turnover and absenteeism, saving time and money while preserving valuable experience.
Suppliers and business partners: Respect builds cooperation
The relationships you maintain with suppliers, contractors and other business partners are equally important. These people are not simply there to deliver goods, complete tasks or meet deadlines. They are part of the network that keeps your business operating.
Unrealistic demands, blame and poor communication create unnecessary friction. By contrast, mutual respect, clear expectations, cooperation and appreciation can improve efficiency and reduce costly mistakes.
In one business I managed, we focused on helping our people understand and value each other’s roles. The results were significant: productivity increased, errors declined, absenteeism fell and customer satisfaction improved. The lesson was clear: when people work together rather than against each other, everyone benefits.
Make relationships a business priority
Business owners naturally focus on cash flow, sales and profitability. But these are outcomes, not the whole story. Behind every successful transaction is a relationship, and behind every sustainable business is a network of people who choose to support it.
So, take a moment to consider how you treat the people connected to your business. Do your customers feel appreciated? Do your employees feel valued? Do your suppliers and partners feel respected?
Ask yourself what motivates you to do your best work. Is it fear of punishment, financial reward, or the satisfaction of knowing your contribution is recognised and appreciated?
Now consider whether you provide that same environment for others.
People are not an interruption to business. They are the reason business succeeds. By investing in better relationships, you can create a stronger team, more loyal customers, more effective partnerships and a more sustainable business.
Ultimately, the question is not simply how to get more business. It is how to build a business that people want to be part of, support and return to.
Because when you put people first, better business results can follow.
