Why Businesses often fail

Article by YREC Director Anthony M Turner

Feel like you’re working harder than ever for less than you expected?

From my experience as a business mentor and skills trainer for 25+ years, I can confidently say you are not alone on this journey. Every passionate small-business owner I have met, me included, has found themselves in this spot at some point in time.

It took a while until I finally realised these hurdles are actually opportunities to shift approach and get closer to our dreams.

Some of the most common issues I discovered include;

  • Forgetting Your “Why”: When things get hectic, it’s easy to lose sight of the dream that started it all. Taking a moment to reconnect with exactly what you want your business to give you—whether that’s more family time or financial freedom—is the first step toward making it happen. Check out the Simon Sinek video ”Understanding the Why”
  • Getting caught up in “Busyness” rather than Business: It’s too easy to get caught up in the “doing,” but there is a big difference between being busy and being productive. By focusing on the 20% of tasks that bring in 80% of your results, you’ll find more energy and funds to grow your business and reduce your stress.
  • Failing to  Delegate: Think of it this way—if your time is worth $100 an hour in sales, doing your own $30-an-hour admin work actually “costs” you $70 in lost potential. Hiring help isn’t just an expense; it’s a way to buy back your time so you can focus on what you’re best at and what generates the best results.
  • Losing focus on Success: By prioritising high-return tasks (the business rather than busyness) you will be better able to afford the systems or people to handle the busyness stuff that slows you down. This simple shift allows you to stop paying a “premium” to do everything yourself and start enjoying the rewards of a healthy business.

I truly believe intentional changes will help you step out of constant busyness and take you closer to the successful business you both desire and deserve.
